Hawaiian Bread

  • 1 cup scalded whole milk ( yes it makes a difference)

  • 1 egg

  • 2 tablespoons butter (margarine just won’t do)

  • 1/2 cup vanilla sugar

  • 3/4 teaspoon sea salt

  • 3 cups unbleached bread flour

  • 4 teaspoons vital wheat gluten

  • 2 1/2 teaspoons yeast

Add ingredients to bread machine as your manufacturer suggests. Choose dough cycle.

When cycle is done, remove and shape into a loaf and let rise for 30 minutes, then bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 35 minutes. After removing from pan to cool, brush top with melted butter.

I did have to add about an extra 1/4 cup of flour, just because of the humidity here. Please don’t be afraid to lift the lid of your bread machine and touch and feel the dough. You want it not to be sticky but soft like a baby’s bottom.

I’d like to try this without the bread machine…I think it would adapt well. Hawaiian bread is my adult son’s favorite. It could be fun to surprise him with homemade! Debra
